A recent consumer research study conducted by the Material Innovation Initiative (MII) and North Mountain Consulting Group sheds light on this growing trend, revealing the increasing demand for next-generation natural fibers in apparel.


The study surveyed over 1,000 US adults and found that an overwhelming 92% of respondents were willing to purchase next-generation products. Among them, 41% stated that they were very likely or extremely likely to make such purchases, while 51% showed moderate inclination. These highly inclined individuals were identified as "early adopters" of next-gen materials, and what sets them apart is their willingness to spend at least the same amount on these sustainable alternatives as they would on conventional materials.


Traditional animal-based products and petrochemical-based synthetics are losing their appeal as consumers become more conscious of the environmental impact of these materials. Conventional items like leather, wool, down, silk, and fur are known to have significant environmental consequences, which is why next-generation materials are gaining traction. These innovative alternatives are created without the use of animals or their byproducts, employing cutting-edge processes and materials such as recycled textiles, plant-based fibers, algae, mycelium, agricultural waste, programmed microorganisms, and grown animal cells.


One notable finding from the study is that consumers who are inclined to adopt next-gen materials are willing to pay a premium for sustainability. These early adopters recognize the value and impact of sustainable fashion and are ready to invest in these eco-friendly alternatives. Their willingness to spend at least the same amount on next-gen materials showcases the growing importance of sustainability in the purchasing decisions of consumers.
