The world of sustainable fashion has a new addition - Brazilian Golden Grass. Also known as Capim Dourado in Portuguese, this natural grass is found only in the remote region of Jalapão, Tocantins, in the North region of Brazil. It is a significant part of the handicraft tradition that has developed in the region, thanks to the visionary woman, Guilhermina Ribeiro Silva, or Dona Miuda, who recognized the potential of this humble grass.

Golden Grass is scientifically known as Syngonanthus Nitens and has a unique golden color, which lends itself perfectly to creating stunning pieces of jewelry, purses, baskets, and placemats. The craftswomen of Jalapão use the technique of tightly weaving the coils of Golden Grass with strips from the Mauritia Flexuosa palm's young leaves. This technique has been passed down from generation to generation of indigenous women in the region.

For decades, these handicrafts were only made for household use or sold sporadically. However, Dona Miuda saw the gold value in this special Brazilian grass and created the first community association of artisans in Jalapão to preserve and promote the art of Golden Grass crafts. She passed on her skills to countless artisans and transformed the quality of life in her community.

Golden Grass, Capim Dourado, how it grows

Today, there are at least 12 associations working with Golden Grass crafts, and their products have become some of the most exquisite crafts in Brazil. Not only has this art form provided a means of livelihood to the people of Jalapão, but it has also become a form of authentic, cultural, and traditional Brazilian art.

The value of Golden Grass goes beyond its beauty and cultural significance. The communities in the Jalapão region understand the importance of this precious raw material and promote a sustainable process of planting and harvesting it. Only one of the approximately 800 members of a community association can harvest Golden Grass from September through the end of November, ensuring that the grass is not over-harvested and allowing it to regenerate and thrive in the region.

Apart from being culturally and environmentally sustainable, Golden Grass is also incredibly durable. Its unique composition makes it resistant to water, heat, and even fire, making it perfect for crafting jewelry that can last a lifetime. The grass is so strong that it is often used to make bracelets and necklaces that can withstand daily wear and tear.

In a world where the fast fashion industry has a significant environmental impact, Golden Grass provides a sustainable alternative. By promoting and supporting the art of Golden Grass crafts, we can support the artisans of Jalapão and help preserve this unique cultural heritage. The FOB, or The Finest of Brazil, is one such platform that provides a wide selection of Golden Grass products, which can be delivered worldwide.

Golden Grass is more than just a humble grass from a remote region in Brazil. It represents the cultural and environmental sustainability of the region and provides a unique opportunity for sustainable fashion. By supporting the artisans of Jalapão, we can help preserve and promote this beautiful and durable material while contributing to the livelihoods of the people in the region. The art of Golden Grass crafts is indeed gold, and we must value our precious environment to better preserve and care for our only world.
